From Burnout to Boundaries: Reclaim Your Time and Joy in Business
May 26, 2025
Let’s get real for a moment...
How often are you burning the candle at both ends in your business?
A couple of months ago, I found myself staring at my laptop screen at 11 PM, a warm Diet Pepsi by my side, feeling both exhilarated... and utterly drained.
This isn’t what I signed up for when I started my business. Sound familiar?
The Wake-Up Call
The last year has been a whirlwind. My business is growing, clients are coming in, and on paper, it all looks amazing. But behind the scenes? I was drowning.
I missed another one of my boys’ hockey practices and barely made it to any of my son’s baseball games this summer, which is not like me. And when I finally pulled myself away from work, I realized my family had stopped waiting for me to eat. My husband, trying to be kind, casually said, “Oh, we didn’t think you’d make it to dinner… again.” Ouch.
That was my moment of clarity. I started this business to create freedom, not to become a slave to my laptop. I wanted more time with my family, but somewhere along the way, I’d lost sight of that.
The Hustle Culture Trap
Let’s be honest; we’ve all fallen into the hustle culture trap. We wear our 60-hour workweeks like a badge of honour. “Look at me, I’m crushing it!” But the truth? Inside, we’re being crushed.
I had to face the hard fact that my relentless drive was leading me straight into burnout.
Here’s what my personal burnout bingo card looked like... Maybe you can relate:
- Saying yes to every client, even when my gut screamed no.
- Feeling guilty because I am missing my kids' activities that I offer to help manage their teams.
- Checking emails at 11 PM “just in case.”
- Feeling guilty for taking a lunch break or even a day off.
- Ignoring self-care and skipping the gym… or even forgetting where my running shoes are!
From Burnout to Boundaries: The Shift
I decided it was time for a major shift. It’s time to hustle less and live more. I’m making changes that prioritize my life and well-being, and I’m inviting you to do the same.
What I’m Kicking to the Curb:
- Late-night work sessions (goodbye, warm Diet Pepsi's at midnight).
- Saying yes to projects that don’t light me up.
- Skipping family dinners for “urgent” emails.
- Pushing through fatigue and burnout because I have to keep up!
What I’m Adding Into My Life:
- CEO Days: Because my business deserves my attention, not just my clients.
- A Hard Stop at 4 PM: Family time is non-negotiable, and so is my own downtime
- Morning Movement: Whether it’s a workout or a quick walk, turns out I don’t break if I bend!
- More Joy + Play: Somewhere along the way, I stopped having fun and dancing around in my kitchen with my kids. Dance Parties are the best!
It’s Not Selfish, It’s Survival
Here’s the truth: setting boundaries isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.
When I take care of myself, I show up as a better coach, mom, partner, and friend.
And guess what? My business doesn’t fall apart when I step away... it actually thrives because I’m more present and focused when I am working. Who knew?
Take One Small Step Today
I challenge you to set one boundary this week. Maybe it’s no phone at the dinner table, or no emails after 5 PM. Trust me, the world won’t fall apart, but you might just feel a little more in control and let's face it, lighter!
